The following steps are based on the Baofeng UV-5R V2+ model, but should apply to any UV-5R series Baofeng model.

The other method to communicate with a radio is through a repeater. A repeater is an electronic device that receives a signal on one frequency and retransmits it at a higher level or higher power, or onto the other side of an obstruction on a different frequency, so that the signal can cover longer distances. So, the repeater’s transmitting frequency is our receiving frequency and our transmitting frequency is the repeater’s receiving frequency. The difference in the transmitting frequency and the receiving frequency is called the OFFSET. Usually in US, offset is the listed repeater frequency +/-600 KHz for VHF and +/- 5MHz for UHF.

The information required to program a repeater is:

– The repeater’s frequency
– The offset
– The Shift Direction
– The CTCSS or PL tone

Most repeater information can be found here: http://www.repeaterbook.com/

1: set the device to frequency mode. This can be done by pressing the orange [VFO/MR] key. VFO stands for Variable Frequency Oscillator (Frequency Mode) and MR stands for Memory Recall (Channel Mode)

2: set WN (Wideband / Narrowband) to wide (wide = 5 khz)

1: press [MENU]
2: use the up/down arrow or press the 5 to jump to the WN menu item
3: press [MENU] and use the up/down keys to set the value to WIDE.
4: press [MENU] to confirm/save
5: press [EXIT]

3: set the frequency OFFSET

1: press [MENU]
2: use the up/down arrow or press 26 to jump to the OFFSET menu item
3: press [MENU] and use the up/down keys to set the value to the required offset.
4: press [MENU] to confirm/save
5: press [EXIT]

4: set the shift direction of the offset (+/-) [SFT-D]

1: press [MENU]
2: use the up/down arrow or press 25 to jump to the SFT-D menu item
3: press [MENU] and use the up/down keys to set the shift direction to + or -.
4: press [MENU] to confirm/save
5: press [EXIT]

5: set the transmitting/receiving CTCSS or DCS [ONLY WHEN REQUIRED]

CTCSS stands for Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System. Also known as PL tone (PL=Private Line for Motorola devices) or sub-channel. This is a sub audible tone transmitted along with the signal and only the devices set with the correct tone can listen. Not all repeaters require CTCSS and some only require Transmission CTCSS.

R-CTCS

1: press [MENU]
2: use the up/down arrow or press 11 to jump to the R-CTCS menu item
3: press [MENU] and use the up/down keys to set desired tone.
4: press [MENU] to confirm/save
5: press [EXIT]

T-CTCS

1: press [MENU]
2: use the up/down arrow or press 13 to jump to the T-CTCS menu item
3: press [MENU] and use the up/down keys to set the desired tone.
4: press [MENU] to confirm/save
5: press [EXIT]

The same instructions apply for Digital Coded Squelch (DCS)

6: type in the frequency using key pad.

Now when the PTT (Push To Talk) button is pressed, the frequency should change to transmitting frequency which should be receiving frequency +/- 600 KHz for VHF or +/- 5MHz for UHF

7: Save the frequency to a channel.
